We’ve been apart for too long. Our spirits are hungry for friendship and date night again. Now, we fully understand how much our favorite places on the corner and down the road truly mean to us.
Early Bird Is the New Normal
Everybody working from home is ready to leave the “office” right at 5 these days. Letting loose and getting out for some well-deserved fun is now serious business. Connection is what everyone craves. That means Millennials and Gen Xers now order entrees almost as early as grandparents traditionally do. The popular reservation time of 7:30-8-ish has been dialed back by a couple of hours. OpenTable survey data shows that early bird reservations are “up 8% as a percentage of total dinner reservations.” So, get your early on.
Connecting Is Thriving
After everything we’ve recently been through, we’re starved for company, camaraderie, and breaking bread communally. OpenTable says that “single-diner reservations are down 15%” and reservations for two-tops and four-tops are up 3%.” Restaurants are beginning to benefit once again in a less lonely, less only world. Blind dates are back. Mom and dad are finding a babysitter and getting out to stare into one another’s eyes across a table too.
Short, Sweet Menus Will Carry On
Smaller menus seem to be here to stay. For fast food restaurants, rightsized menus make drive-through times faster and keep lines moving. Menu trimming also helps higher end restaurants manage the surge in take-out and relieve staffing issues for eat-in dining. This year, the supply chain and inflation pose the need for extra creativity and fewer offerings. If beef is hard to find this week, turkey may take its place or another protein. This new trend of shrunken menus is greener too, helping restaurants reduce food waste in the kitchen.
Plant-based Choices Are Growing
Faux proteins made of plants and purely plant-based hero entrees are both gaining in popularity. Plant-based burgers are now in supermarkets, drive-throughs, and on menus for all the right reasons. What’s more, consumers are conscious about the planet and their health. The “new flexitarian” deliberately chooses when to give traditional proteins a rest. Chefs are catering to this trend and powering up veggie creativity to stay one plate ahead.
Renewed Restaurant Appreciation and Support
Thanks to a lot of press, the public understands that the restaurant struggle has been real. No one liked seeing 10% of the restaurant population go under. So, there’s a new spirit of empathy in the air, along with an understanding that costs may be higher, and that service may be slower with staffing shortages. That’s ok for most of us now. There’s a feeling that people want to lift up their local restaurants, now truly seen as our real community centers. The people who cook, serve, and entertain us deserve extra support right now.
Outdoor Eating Spaces Keep Growing
Having the choice to eat outside is more popular than ever. OpenTable’s recent diner survey says that “82% of people want to see outdoor seating options continue to grow.” Cities and towns have eased up on the restrictions, allowing establishments to incorporate parking lot and sidewalk spaces to make this flexibility possible. Patios are also getting the green light to expand to incorporate more tables, new heating and cooling systems, and structural tweaks for enclosures that keep four-season use comfortable.
Keeping a custom project on track is essential during this time of tight restaurant profit margins. Restauranteurs should tap into expert advice on commercial-grade materials, shades, design, installation, and more. We’re happy to answer any question and point you to commercial partners as well. Because using products with integrity is always on trend.
Keeping restaurant guests warm has never been a hotter topic. Two options to keep your restaurant patio humming along in challenging weather are a high-quality patio enclosure and reliable heaters. Often, they are used together as a one-two comfort punch. Enclosures allow protection from the elements and better control over healthier airflow. Patio heaters allow you to fine-tune temperature for extra coziness by simply touching an “on” switch.
You’ll want to do a little research first. Some heaters are fine on an outdoor patio. Others are better choices with an enclosed patio. The fuel they use, safety and government regulations and installation considerations will all be part of your decision. Talking to a professional as you narrow down is always a great idea.
First, Length x Width = Patio Heater Warmth
If you’ve already enclosed your patio, you likely already know its measurements to within ¼ of an inch. If you don’t, get out that steel tape measure. Accurately measuring length and width will get you to the right square footage. And who doesn’t want to know what they’re working with? Also, consider which temperature you want to maintain while people sit at your tables. Once you know the cubic square footage of your patio, multiply it by the number of degrees you want to raise the temperature. That’s how many thousands of BTUs your heaters need to kick out to be effective.
The ABCs and BTUs of Restaurant Patio Heaters.
Natural Gas and Propane
These two options burn cleaner since they don’t produce smoke or odor. They do, however, put out carbon dioxide so that requires enough ventilation and air circulation. Both are cost-effective and efficient. Natural gas heaters need to be installed by a professional. Propane heaters are usually portable because the tank is generally attached to the heater. The tank needs to be refilled, which can get expensive.
Here are a few rough guesstimates:
25.000 BTU gas heater mostly heats about an 8×8 foot square area.
35.000 to 40.000 BTU gas heaters heat 8 to 10 feet high and will likely heat a 12’x12′ area.
50.000 to 75.000 BTU heaters will typically heat a 15×15 foot area fairly easily.
Electric Heaters
If you don’t have natural gas lines, electric could be a good option for you. Obviously, these heaters need to have an outlet or be hardwired. So, check your service panel. You’ll want to understand how much available power you have for your restaurant if you add them to the mix. Considered to be safer than gas, electric heaters also tend to offer nice style. What’s more, they’re low maintenance and they heat as well as gas with half the BTU ratings.
A 6000w 240 volt electric heater can often compete with a 34.000 BTU gas heater in about a 12’x12′ space. And of course, it depends on the heater. Every brand offers a different output.
With both gas and electric fuel, you likely have a choice between warm air, convection and radiant infrared heaters. Many say that the radiant infrared version provides a more immediate warmth vs. the others which create more lag time.
Surround those heaters with a weather protector.
When patio heaters team up with an enclosure, you have a dynamic duo that keeps comfort at the top of your menu. So, you’ll want a patio enclosure made with strong bones. That means buying one that offers the strongest fabrics available paired with the most durable construction to keep rain, sleet, wind and snow at bay. A high-quality enclosure also cuts down on the fuel usage needed to keep guests happy.

Over the last couple of years, we have seen a lot of fun going on under patios where we have installed commercial/restaurant enclosures. All over the country, people love to watch sports while enjoying good food & cold drinks on an enclosed patio. One of our installers, Chase, has raved about these patios and how fun it would be to visit again as a patron of the restaurant or bar. So let’s explore “Chase’s Enclosed Patio Tour,” and share some of the best patios across the nation where people are enjoying watching the big game.
Let’s start the tour off in the Northeast part of the country:
LandShark Bar & Grill in Atlantic City is the only year-round full-service bar and restaurant on the sand side of the Atlantic City Boardwalk. Located on 200 feet of prime beach frontage at the site of the Old Steeplechase Pier, LandShark Bar & Grill brings its guests right to the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. Imagine watching football on their spacious enclosed patio, while also being able to enjoy a seaside view! With patio seating for over 200 guests, there’s plenty of room for groups of football fans to partake of their signature juicy cheeseburgers and cold beer.
Morgan’s Pier in Philadelphia is a one of a kind venue, providing an outdoor barbecue ambiance while serving unique food offerings from seasonal Chefs’ menus. Each season throughout the year, Morgan’s Pier invites a different celebrated chef to take over the kitchen with their version of a chef-hosted backyard barbecue.
Located along the Delaware River Waterfront, the view is fabulous whether you’re sitting on the open deck, or under the covered patio/bar area. The enclosed patio seating area is perfect for those who want a more secluded space to enjoy cocktails and conversation, but it isn’t so isolated that one can’t enjoy the view or the festive mood.
In 2015, Morgan’s Pier was named “Most Popular Bar in Pennsylvania” by Buzzfeed, and in 2017 Philly Happening Magazine called it the Best Outdoor Dining.
Located about 28 miles northwest of Philadelphia, the close-knit community of Lansdale is home to many Philadelphia Eagles fans. The enclosed patio atMargaritas is the place watch an Eagles game! This popular Mexican restaurant attracts football fans by offering game day specials, as well as their regular menu of tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, and more. The beautiful enclosed patio lets guests enjoy lovely autumn days during football season while remaining comfortable.
From the Northeast, we’ll travel down to the Midwestern state of Kansas…
Sullivan’s Steakhouse in Leawood, KS serves classic steakhouse fare in an elegant, yet relaxing, atmosphere. Located across the street from the Town Center Plaza, it’s a great place to unwind after a long day of shopping with some of the best Kansas City steaks, fresh seafood, and signature cocktails in a genuinely unique steakhouse atmosphere. The Kansas City Pitch awarded Sullivan’s Steakhouse their “Best Patio Seating” award in 2010. Their enclosed patio features seating for 60 people, with heaters to keep the space warm and cozy during the fierce Kansas winter months. Moving along on our tour, let’s stop in Little Rock, Arkansas for some tasty Tex-Mex on the patio at Chuy’s…
The firstChuy’s Restaurant originally opened on April 16, 1982, on iconic Barton Springs Road in Austin, TX. The restaurant’s founders had a vision of a fun and funky Tex-Mex restaurant that served authentic and fresh food in an atmosphere that appealed to everyone. From these humble beginnings to present day, Chuy’s is now an iconic destination for lovers of Tex-Mex cuisine in 19 states. Tex-Mex food just always seems best in the fresh air. Relaxing on a patio with a margarita while watching a game, or enjoying people watching, is one of life’s most simple, perfect pleasures. If the weather turns nasty, the patio can be enclosed to keep out the wind and rain. The eclectic decor and fun loving atmosphere at Chuy’s double the already enjoyable experience.
Here in Knoxville, TN we have another Chuy’s location, featuring the same signature Tex-Mex menu and fun ambiance that is in all their locations. A spacious patio area lets diners enjoy their margaritas in the fresh air while remaining protected from the elements. Tacos and enchiladas always taste great, but they’re even better when experienced outside. Watching the big game on the patio at Chuy’s just makes an ordinary Sunday afternoon feel like a party! Venturing South on our tour, let’s take a look at a few enclosed patios in the great state of Texas! Texans love sports, and they love being outdoors. It’s no surprise that there are so many great locations to watch a game on a comfortably enclosed patio…
Known as the “living room of Uptown,” Eastwood’s Bar is a popular neighborhood place serving elevated American fare with an extensive cocktail menu. The large covered patio is “dog- friendly,” so patrons can bring their best friend along for a night out. Rain or shine, customers can watch sports from any of the several television screens placed around the patio. There’s a great view, no matter where you’re sitting. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram named Eastwood’s Bar as one of the best places to watch the Super Bowl in 2017. With plenty of seating and multiple television screens, this is one of the most popular places in the area to spend game day.
Wise Guys Pizzeria in Grapevine, Texas specializes in pizza, pasta, and premium drafts. Could there be any better accompaniment to watching a game? The variety of Italian fare on the menu, as well as kids’ choices, means that there is something there that will appeal to everyone. The patio at Wise Guys Pizzeria has large televisions, so you can enjoy the fresh air while enjoying your game-day plans. Ceiling fans keep the patio cool and breezy in the Texas heat during the day, and screens prevent annoying insects from interfering with diners.
The Pour House is a neighborhood sports pub located in the Lakewood neighborhood of Dallas, TX. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner; this is a haven for anyone who loves to watch sports. They are known for their delicious burgers, signature pizza, and a large selection of local beers and national microbrews. The enclosed patio at Pour House features several prominently placed televisions so that everyone can see the action. Long communal tables allow for groups of friends to cheer on their favorite team while making friends with fellow fans.
There is a saying that almost everything is bigger in Texas, and the Smoke’n Honey House proves this! It has approximately 14,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor seating space, nearly 40 beers on tap, about 60 different bottled beers, and a mouth-watering menu of barbecue and sandwiches. The spacious patio seating area is the perfect spot to enjoy a beautiful view while hanging out with friends. The enclosed patio features motorized blinds, which the wait staff can lower with just a push of a button to help keep the space cool and cut down on harsh sun glare. Finally, we end the tour by visiting Florida, the Sunshine State. With plenty of coastline and ocean breezes, it’s no wonder that hanging out on enclosed patios are so popular with sports fans all over the state….
Applebee’s Restaurants are known for their extensive menu of American dishes, as well as a wide selection of beers and cocktails. The kids’ menu makes it easy for families to enjoy dining out, without having to worry about finding a place that can please everyone. In Florida, people love the bright sunshine and fresh air. At Applebee’s, an enclosed patio with large televisions allows sports fan to watch their favorite game while enjoying their favorite Applebee’s specialties, without being bothered by annoying insects.
The name says it all! At World of Beer, you can find 50 craft beers on tap, over 500 bottled varieties in the cooler and a menu of tasty tavern food. Their trained staff can help you pair the perfect beer with your dinner, or answer any beer related questions one might have. Located near the coast, World of Beer’s patio seating lets patrons enjoy an ocean breeze with their favorite beer. Since World of Beer is great for anyone who enjoys watching sports, the expanded seating capacity on the patio allows as many fans as possible to meet up and cheer for their favorite team.

We are building lifelong relationships with our clients, who become more like family, and our biggest goal is to make sure that your cafe blinds perform the way you hope they will and the way they are intended. How can you care for your cafe blinds once they are installed, to make sure that you follow manufacturer’s recommendations? It requires respect, commitment, and a focus on safety.
Respect the Power of Your Outdoor Blinds
Cafe Blinds from Southern Patio Enclosures are your key to keeping your business comfortable all year long.
They may seem like just some vinyl curtains, but your cafe blinds have a great deal of power and understanding that can help you use them respectfully. Each panel of your outdoor blinds is approximately 100 square feet. Combine that size with a swift 35 mph gut, and you have a 1000 pound force that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Because of this, it’s important to set good habits when using your cafe blinds.
Every time you are finished with your outdoor blinds, whether that means it’s the end of the day or your event has been successfully completed, roll them up. It may seem like an unnecessary extra step, but retracting your cafe blinds will keep them protected from unexpected wind gusts. Keeping them retracted often also helps to keep the attachments and tie downs in good condition by eliminating extra stress on those connections.
Observe Safety Precautions When Using Your Blinds
When winds do come or are forecasted, it’s important for you to ensure safety first. In the event of a storm, evacuate the area and worry about retracting your cafe blinds when the situation is safe. This is especially true with storms that pop up quickly, like tornados or severe thunderstorms. While you want to protect and preserve your blinds, the most important concern should be your safety and the safety of your customers and staff. If you can prevent the blinds from being down when winds descend, please do. Get into the habit of paying attention to the weather, adjusting your use of your patio enclosures as needed.

Cafe Blinds for Commercial Applications Only
Custom built cafe blinds at Matt’s!
As we expanded and grew, our focus changed. We realized that we wanted to be an expert in the field of commercial cafe blinds, and so we closed our residential cafe blinds division. We are now proud to recommend Mosquito Curtains, an online company that can help you enclose your residential space. We believe in their product and their customer service commitment; we invite you to take a look at their products.
In the meantime, we have developed the very best commercial cafe blinds on the market. Our manual or motorized options are completely customizable, offering you both color and fabric choices that can be designed to fit even the toughest spaces. Each set of patio enclosures is rated to resist a minimum of 45 mph wind gusts, and uses the strongest vinyl on the market. Our unique radio frequency welding process bonds our clear vinyl more powerfully than our competitors, and our colored vinyl is made from architectural grade vinyl.
Focusing on Commercial Patio Enclosures Serves You
With our focus exclusively on the commercial side of our business, we are better able to serve customers like you. We can focus on your unique needs, customizing our support to the needs and demands of businesses rather than splitting our focus. You’ve worked hard to create a business that reflects your brand, choosing every aspect of the location and the décor with your final goal in mind. When you choose cafe blinds, to extend your usable square footage throughout the year, why would you do any different? You want a product that is sturdy, well-constructed, and practically invisible—and we can help you create a product that does just that for your business.
Cafe Blinds are Built to Be Low Profile
Our motorized cafe blinds can be designed and installed to become just another part of your business’s architecture. The way they are designed, our curtains completely recess into their hood, creating a sleek profile regardless of where they are installed. If you are looking for an even more unobtrusive look, so that the cafe blinds can hardly be detected when they are not engaged, you can choose to have them installed inside the wall or an overhead fixture. Your business’s design aesthetic will remain intact, and nothing has to call attention to the installation of your cafe blinds.
Motorized Cafe Blinds in Austin, Texas at Wise Guy’s Pizzeria that were customized by Southern Patio Enclosures.
Cafe Blinds are Built to Be Sturdy
When we designed our motorized cafe blinds, we wanted them to last. So we not only constructed the patio enclosures themselves from the finest materials (radio frequency welded clear vinyl, architectural grade colored opaque vinyl, and Kevlar mesh sun shades), but we also created a structure that will last as well. Surrounded by metal housing and tracks, the cafe blinds slide solidly into the side tracks like the mainsail on a sailboat. Regardless of the pressure of the wind or elements, the curtains cannot slip out the way our competitors’ motorized zippered systems might. We combine this sturdy design with a reinforced roll tube on the top and an industry-leading bottom weight bar, allowing us to design larger patio enclosures than our competitors.
Cafe Blinds are Easy to Use
Because of the strength of this design, our motorized patio enclosures are incredibly easy to use. The standard method for deploying your motorized blinds is a remote control, and you can deploy up to 16 blinds with the push of a couple of buttons. The motorized system allows you to protect your outdoor space quickly, efficiently, and without disrupting an event or a customer’s experience. You can also choose from three other options, including a wall mounted switch, a smartphone app, or a system that detects the weather and adjusts your patio enclosures accordingly. Whatever you want for your Dell Valley, Texas restaurant or Philadelphia hotel, we can design an option that suits you.

Your Pflugerville, Texas restaurant is your dream come true and the patio is the most popular place for locals to hang out and watch college football, celebrate family events, and host company parties. But there are times when using that outdoor space is challenging, or even impossible. Rainy weather, blustery days, or the steaming hot Texas summer can make it nearly impossible to enjoy an outdoor meal—but cafe blinds can fix that. Our cafe blinds are customizable, designed to stand up to the elements while complimenting your brand and décor.

Our Cafe Blinds are Designed With Your Brand in Mind
Whether you are known for your eclectic design scheme or are a well-known franchise, we can design your cafe blinds to suit your location’s existing structure and décor. Nothing’s worse than trying to solve one problem—an outdoor space that can’t be used because of the weather—and suddenly finding yourself faced with another—an ugly eyesore that you don’t want to use. We work with you to create a design that preserves the view, fits your space perfectly, and matches your brand’s color and unique personality. We will walk with you step-by-step through the design process, giving you the option to choose your fabric, color, and motorized options along the way and providing you with our decades of patio enclosures experience to help you make those choices.
Your Cafe Blinds are Crafted to Last
Durability is our primary goal, which is why we construct our patio window panels from superior materials. That starts with the fabric, which is amazing on every level. First, our clear vinyl is bonded with radio frequency welds, with each of our patio enclosures constructed with a double thickness of this durable material. Our opaque vinyl is the strongest on the market, architectural grade vinyl that’s three times as strong as fiberglass options. Even after more than five years of weathering and daily stress, our cafe blinds lose only 1% of their original strength. We also offer a Kevlar windscreen option for your patio enclosures, which is Miami-Dad certified to withstand hurricane strength winds and debris up to 120 mph. Seriously—we work with the strongest materials possible so that you don’t have to worry that your cafe blinds will fail after a single season of use.
