How the Systems Work

Short overviews of what we build and how each system behaves on a real patio.

Overview of Southern Patio Enclosures Products

A short tour of both systems we build -- manual rope-and-pulley roll enclosures and motorized screens -- and how each one suits a different patio.

Overview of our Rope and Pulley Patio Enclosures

How the manual rope-and-pulley system works: clear vinyl panels that roll up from the bottom, secured on a cleat, with no motor or power required.

Overview of our Motorized Screens and Enclosures

How the motorized system works: a roller tube driven by a tubular motor, with keder track retention holding the fabric through wind loading.

Operation

How a Manual Roll Panel Operates

Header rail Cleat Cleat
How a manual roll panel operates. Two cords run over pulleys set roughly two feet in from each side. Pull both together and a weighted bar at the bottom of the panel lifts, so the clear vinyl coils around itself from the bottom upward — the same way an old bamboo shade rolls. That bar is what keeps the panel from sagging between the two cords. Wrapping each cord on its cleat holds the panel at any height, and easing them back down re-covers the opening. Nothing is powered, so it keeps working in an outage.

Why a diagram, not a video

Our original operating video dates from 2012. The mechanism has not changed, so the explanation is redrawn rather than re-filmed — it loads instantly, reads on a phone, and search engines can read the description as text.

Care & Maintenance

Keeping clear vinyl optically clear is most of what determines how long it lasts.

How to clean your Clear Vinyl patio curtains

Cleaning and maintaining clear vinyl panels so they stay optically clear rather than clouding or yellowing -- the routine that most extends panel life.

What we use to clean clear vinyl

These are the two products our own crews use. We do not sell them and earn nothing from these links — they are here because "what should I clean it with?" is the question we are asked most after an install.
