Home/Motorized vs Manual

Motorized vs manual patio enclosures

Choose motorized if your patio opens and closes often, has wide or tall openings, or can’t spare staff time when the weather turns. Choose manual if the patio is smaller or changes with the seasons and you want a lower price. Plenty of patios use both.

Choose motorized when…

  • The patio opens and closes often, sometimes more than once a day.
  • Staff time is tight when a storm cell shows up on radar.
  • Your openings are wide or tall. Motorized covers openings up to 25 feet wide or 16 feet high.
  • You want the clear view. MaxView clear panels run up to 24 feet wide.
  • The patio is a booked room, such as a hotel, rooftop or event venue.
  • You want the higher wind rating, with no tie-downs to secure.

Motorized systems are what many people search for as electric outdoor curtains. The curtain rolls out of a hood and locks into a track on both sides, and the motor is under warranty for 5 years.

Choose manual when…

  • The patio is smaller, or the enclosure comes down a few times a season instead of every day.
  • You want the lowest price for the same weather protection.
  • The panels are 12 feet wide or less. Panels zip together to cover runs up to 60 feet.
  • You like a simple system your own staff can run in seconds.
  • You want to swap clear vinyl for shade fabric in summer. Manual enclosure track and sun shade track can be mounted back to back.

Taller than 12 feet is where manual stops. For those openings, motorized is the better answer.

You can mix them on one patio

Some patios have openings that behave differently. A wide front opening might open every day, while a side wall never needs to. We can put motorized units where you open and close the patio often, manual panels where staff can roll them by hand, and fixed clear panels where nothing needs to open. Fixed panels also work for seasonal openings.

The same motorized track can also carry Nano mesh sun shade, which some people call automatic patio screens. It blocks up to 97% of the sun and drops patio temperature about 10 degrees.

One of our recent jobs used five motorized units, two fixed clear panels, two framed doors and four posts. The middle quote for jobs that mix systems in 2026 was near $58,000.

Questions

Is motorized worth the extra cost?

It depends on how often the patio opens and closes, how big the openings are, and what staff time is worth during a weather change. A typical 2026 motorized job was near $47,000 and a typical manual job near $21,000, but the jobs differ in size too. We will tell you honestly which one your patio needs.

Which holds up better in wind?

Motorized. It is rated 65 mph deployed. Manual is rated 45 mph and needs its tie-downs secured when the panels are down.

How long does each one last?

Manual lasts about five years in commercial hospitality use with proper care. Motorized lasts ten years or more with routine maintenance.

How long until it is installed?

Motorized takes 8 weeks from deposit. Manual takes 6 weeks, or 8 weeks when it includes framed metal doors.

Can I install it myself?

No. Our own crews deliver and install every job. Motorized systems are never shipped because the assembly is heavy and the track alignment is unforgiving.

What does my patio need before you can install?

A roof or structure, either already built or in the drawings. We do not build roofs or structural supports. If there is nothing to hang from, we can add powder-coated aluminum posts and headers.
